Camping Corner

December 16, 2013

By Tom Barnett
This week I want to take a use this space for a bit of shameless self promotion. As you may or may not know, interviews for summer camp staff have already started. We have been tirelessly working to fill the staff positions at both Little Sioux and Camp Cedars, but we are always looking for more. We want to be sure that our Scouts are getting the best possible program while at camp, and to do that we need the best possible staff. I urge you to get word out to your unit leaders to encourage their Scouts to apply for staff at either camp. Just like the rest of the year, a strong Cub Scout program leads to a strong Boy Scout program. It is no different with summer camp. Maybe encourage your Den Chiefs to apply for Little Sioux. Do you know any Eagle Scouts or Silver Award Venturers? Well, they get an increase in staff pay for their accomplishment. Maybe there is simply a Scout who you or a Scoutmaster thinks would be great on staff. Encourage them all to apply, and make sure that they are considering Little Sioux as well as Cedars. The benefits of being on a summer camp staff are too numerous to list here, but there is no doubt that they will serve that staffer well into the future. We get the chance to impact the lives of the youth every day. Let’s make sure that we are giving our Scouts that same chance by encouraging them to apply for summer camp staff.

What are the requirements for a Scout to apply for a camp position? Thanks, Jeff

    General requirements:

Being a currently registered Scout is not required to be a member of the camp staff. All applicants will be interviewed to determine where they may fit best in the summer camp setting. Not all applicants will be granted a position and may be hired based on experience, leadership, and summer availability.

Counselor-in-Training: Must be at least 14 years old.

Camp Staff: Must be at least 15 years old. Must be able to be registered in the BSA to work at camp and wear the prescribed BSA field uniform as well as the camp staff uniform.

NOTE: Some positions require staff to be at least age 16, 18, or 21 due to national or state standards.
