Boy Scouts Honor Citizen and Corporate Partner of the Year

The Boy Scouts of America, Mid-America Council will honor Lee G. Simmons, M.D., Chairman of the Omaha Zoo Foundation as Citizen of the Year and Gallup, Inc. as Corporate Partner of the year on April 21, 2014 at the Scott Conference Center, 6450 Pine St., Omaha at noon.

The Citizen of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America. The award salutes their outstanding leadership and service to the community.

During Dr. Simmons’ 40 years of leadership, he elevated the zoo to an unprecedented level. In 1966, he began his work with the Henry Doorly Zoo as resident veterinarian, where he quickly ascended to Director in 1970. During his tenure, the Henry Doorly Zoo has added several state-of-the-art exhibits, such as the Lied Jungle, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium, the Bill and Berniece Grewcock Center for Conservation and Research, Desert Dome and nocturnal exhibit, Hubbard Gorilla Valley, and others. More than $150 million in development has benefited the community through attracting more than 1.3 million visitors annually, with an economic impact of over $100 million per year.

The Corporate Partner of the Year Award is presented annually to a corporation that exemplifies the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America and assists with providing service to the program.
